The Reality Check
If anyone tells you they made $10k in 30 days clipping gameplay, they're selling you a course. This playbook is the opposite of that.
Read this before anything else
- First dollar lands month 4-7. Livable income ($2-5k/mo) lives at month 12-24. Replacement income ($4k+) is month 18-30. Plan accordingly.
- Posting clips alone won't do it. TikTok pays ~$0.30-0.60 per 1k views in gaming, and you can't even apply until 10k followers. Use it for discovery, not income.
- The platforms that pay at small scale aren't the ones that pay at scale. Twitch and Kick pay subs from day one. YouTube pays SEO-compounded long-form. Stack them in that order.
- Your friend group is the only moat you have. Don't try to out-polish full-time solo creators. Be the channel where the audience knows the friends by name.
- ~70% of gaming creators stall at 100-500 followers and quit in the day-60 valley. If you survive that, you're already in the top 30%.

Where To Post, Ranked
Not all platforms pay equally. This is the order to think about them at small scale.
| Platform | First $ at | Realistic 1-10k | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch | 50 followers | $5-50/mo | Income #1 — Affiliate is reachable in weeks |
| Kick | Day 1 (95/5 split) | $20-200/mo | Best per-sub economics, smaller audience pool |
| YouTube long-form | 500 subs (Tier 1) | $200-400/mo | Compounds — 10-min compilations earn 50-100× same clips as Shorts |
| TikTok | 10k followers | $0 direct | Funnel only — never a primary income |
| YT Shorts | 1k subs + 10M/90d | $3-10 / 100k | Funnel only |
| IG Reels | Brand deals only | $0-100/mo | Free cross-post |
| Discord | 200+ regulars | $300-1k/mo | Best split in the industry (90/10) — long-term goldmine |
| X / FB Reels / Snap | Skip until established | Pocket change | Cross-post if zero effort |
Pick One Game
Generalists grow 3-4× slower than specialists. The algo needs to bucket you. Pick ONE primary game for 90 days. Branch only after you hit 5k followers.
| Niche | Status (2026) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel Rivals | Hungry algo | Hero-mains niches wide open, content ecosystem still settling |
| Cozy games | Hungry algo | $973M market, 675% Steam growth since 2020, lowest production bar |
| Hardcore Soulslike | Hungry algo | Opinionated, hungry community (Elden Ring DLC, Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen) |
| Indie launches | Hungry algo | Riding launch-week algo bumps. Pickups + first impressions. |
| Retro / emulation | Hungry algo | AI-resistant niche. Modern commentary over classic games. |
| Fortnite / Warzone / Apex | Saturated | Competing with full-time creators. Possible but brutal. |
| Generalist Minecraft | Saturated | Pick a sub-niche (modded, hardcore, redstone) instead. |
| NoPixel GTA RP | Saturated | Established creator ecosystem with closed friend groups. |
| Valorant | Saturated | Pro-play replicas everywhere. Pick a different angle (one agent main). |

Why Most Stall At 500 Followers
Every dead channel follows the same pattern. The single biggest predictor of breakthrough: did they survive the day-60 "nothing is working" valley.
The 7 ways gaming creators kill themselves
- Inconsistent posting. 3 days on, 2 weeks off. Algorithm deprioritizes you within a week of silence.
- Generalist niche. One Fortnite clip, one Minecraft clip, one Apex. Algo can't bucket you, so it shows your stuff to nobody.
- No hook discipline. Still using "hey guys what's up" intros. Mobile viewers decide in 800ms.
- Watermarked cross-posts. Uploading the TikTok-watermarked file to Reels and Shorts. 30-50% reach penalty.
- Production-polish trap. Spending 4 hours on one clip instead of shipping 4 clips. Quantity beats polish at small scale.
- Vanity-metric refresh loop. Checking analytics every 30 minutes in the first 90 days kills creative output.
- Quitting at the first plateau. Every channel plateaus at 200, 1k, 10k. Breakthroughs come from changing format, not posting harder.
